The Great Gatsby Critic Reviews

"There are things that I will not mention as I would hate to spoil the ending, but for those of you who know the story, the sets are amazing, considering this is not a sit-down production. This is a road show - they move from town to town, tearing down and rebuilding the set. While the use of projections has helped to simplify the "truck and bus" tours, the creativity of those designing the shows are as important as the talent onstage. This one is perfect. Linda Cho's costumes are powerful and the quick changes that are made, amazing! I find myself using one word quite often in this review. That word is "Amazing", and I use it because this production is just that. They also have cars on stage. If you have a chance, put this on your "to do list"! NOW!" - Around The Town Chicago, Chicago

"There is nothing startlingly original about The Great Gatsby. What sets it apart is its sheer brilliance of presentation, the clear talent and expertise of all the people involved. Even if the product is no more profound than sheer enjoyment, it is made real by the hard work of everyone behind and in front of the scenes, from the touring crew who transport this massive show on its grueling schedule, to the seamsters who stitch the costumes, to the dancers who smile through exhausting tap numbers and the principals who project larger-than-life emotions with glorious voices eight times a week. Go see The Great Gatsby, an incandescent celebration of musical theater craft." - MD Theatre Guide, Washington DC

"This Gatsby is neither the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel you read in high school nor the Leonardo DiCaprio-led film from a decade ago. Instead, the musical, with a book by Kait Kerrigan, music by Jason Howland and lyrics by Nathan Tysen, softens the source material's darker edges, deepens its characters and leans into the romance. The result is a sweeping, tragic tale of star-crossed lovers that loses some of the original's bite but makes for a more satisfying night at the theater." - Cleveland.com, Cleveland

"The design team evokes novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1920s world of stymied love and class conflict, drawing us into fantastical visions of Long Island's wealth and opulence, New York's brooding industrial wastelands, and Manhattan's upper- and lower-echelon decadence. Paul Tate dePoo III's sleek, ornate scenery slides in and out of view, amplifying his projections, which are grounded in the reality of the stage stock, while bending and expanding our perceptions of it." - Statesman.com, Austin

"Having seen the original Broadway production of The Great Gatsby, there was a fair amount of skepticism going into this national tour. However, this touring production rises to the challenge, thoughtfully addressing many of those concerns with clearer storytelling, stronger character development, and a more cohesive overall vision. What emerges is an energetic production that not only redeems many of its predecessor's shortcomings, but showcases some of the brightest touring talent on the road today, resulting in a performance that feels both revitalized and compelling." - BroadwayWorld, Appleton

"The First National Touring Company largely dazzles on the Connor Palace stage, led by its two talented stars, Jake David Smith and Senzel Ahmady, who help bring to life relatively sympathetic incarnations of flawed figures Jay Gatsby and the woman for whom he pines, Daisy Buchanan." - The News-Herald, Cleveland
